The unrest began early in the morning when a large group of students, many armed with sticks and banners, marched towards the Secretariat, the heart of Bangladesh’s government operations. Their demands included a call for greater political freedoms, educational reforms, and an end to what they describe as “oppressive government policies.”
As the students approached the heavily guarded Secretariat, they were met with strong resistance from Ansar members deployed to maintain order. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with both sides exchanging blows and hurling projectiles. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as the protests spiraled out of control, with injured students being carried away by their peers.
The students, undeterred by the resistance, have branded the Ansar members as “agents of the dictator,” a clear reference to the government’s perceived authoritarian stance. They accuse the ruling administration of stifling dissent and using state-backed forces to suppress their legitimate demands.
In response to the violence, government officials have called for calm and urged students to return to their campuses. However, the protesters have vowed to continue their struggle, insisting that their voices must be heard. “We will not be silenced,” one student leader declared. “Our fight is for the future of Bangladesh, and we will not back down.”
The situation remains tense, with fears that the violence could escalate further if a resolution is not reached. The international community is closely monitoring the developments, with calls for both sides to engage in dialogue to avoid further bloodshed.
